Biography
ROBERT SOLHEIM is a producer who has been at the heart of some diverse and exciting collaborative projects over the years, whether it be his ambient-techno project Current, his dark electronic pop as The Opiates with songstress Billie Ray Martin, his Aquavit project with American composer Michael Snyder or his forthcoming Popkissed endeavor with Norwegian singer Lill-Ann Blauenfeldt he has passionately championed a broad arrange of styles and genres. Yet at the heart of his work it’s clear that a love of electronic music is a large part of the driving force behind his recordings and it is this love that is explored with his solo material and his latest releases on his own label Aquavit Records, including sub labels Aquavit BEAT and Aquavit POP. Since the first Current release back in 1997, his music is a frequent visitor on Dj Friendly’s radioshows on NRK P3 (Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation) and in club dj-sets. His releases has also included remixes from names like John Tejada, Swayzak, MIND over MIDI and Dj Puk to name a few. Born on Averoy, a small island on the west coast of Norway, Robert Solheim grew up between the sea, the mountains and music. At a young age, he started to play the organ, progressing through drums, keyboards and singing in various bands, until he discovered a synthesizer named Jupiter-8 and started to compose his own work. Under the name Current he has released several downtempo and ambient-techno albums on Origo Sound, the famous Norwegian label home to artists Biosphere and Erik Wollo. In 2005 he started re- leasing material on his own label Currentmusik. All his releases have been described as extraordinary creative works by the critics. In 2006, his album ‘underCURRENTs’ was nominated as best album and in 2003, the track ‘Ghost Trip’ from the album ‘Communion’ was voted by the public number 7 of the 100 best electronic tracks of all time, placing Robert alongside such names as Kraftwerk, David Sylvian and Underworld to name a few. He has played live and dj-sets in places like Rough Trade in London, Alte Kantine Bargain Berlin with The Opiates, SOS festival in Spain as well as several other festivals and events there, The Villa, Skaugum, Jeager and several other places in Oslo, resident in MOSS club in Spain, etc. Lately also working as Music and Event director for European Touring Route and composing new music with Terje Sæther as well as b2b djsets.
