Biography
Mikail (Mikhail Schemm) was born in Hong Kong and raised in Rome. This, coupled with his Swiss and Filipino heritage, exposed him to all kinds of musical influences. Already as a child he used to listen to his mom 90 dance music compilations, but his first proper exposure to house music, which today is his passion, was a mix CD given to him by his uncle who is one of the Philippine's most notable DJs. He spent his entire teenage years in Rome, where he had his first clubbing experiences with Italian house and electro and at the age of 16 he got his first pair of record players. Later on he moved to London for his studies which was a turning point. Now he was able to catch and see live the biggest names on a regular basis and living the infamous nightlife of the city. Still he feels that his sound was perfectly shaped only after living in Berlin for a year, where he also worked for Minus, Richie Hawtin's label, doing the Press & PR. Mikail's sound revolves around house with a touch of old school and you can hear him spinning from Chicago house to minimal and even banging techno, creating his own style by pulling from all of his various influences, be it 90 dance, Chicago House or Detroit Techno. With a close eye to the dancefloor he has a natural feel for the right track at the right moment. His music has brought him to shows in Miami, Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, Paris, and more recently since his relocation he is a regular at Volar in Hong Kong and in Singapore and Bali. Meanwhile, his FunkyZeit events have become one of the most talked about nights in London, becoming a platform for him to grow as an artist. Through FunkyZeit and other bookings, Mikail has shared decks with the likes of Jamie xx, Magda, Andre Galluzzi, Chez Damier, Kyle Hall, Nina Kraviz and Stacey Pullen just to name a few. He held a residency for mooch, the London offshoot of New York infamous minimoo parties and also held a residency for Another Party, one of London other top warehouse events. His recent relocation to Asia was driven by the desire to help grow the scene in his native part of the world and spread his sound and love for music to wider reaches. His recently founded agency Third Culture Music will be a platform to access the Asian market and bring top quality artists by organizing tours and events in the region.
