Cheap Picasso
Biography
Formed in 2010 by two brothers from different sisters, Cheap Picasso take inspiration from an 80s divided by glamour and glumness. On the one hand, you have the idealised iconography of blue pastel jackets, paraffin cologne, Soul-Glo hairspray and Dan Akroyd, and on the other, grey scale Scargill bashing, vertiginous social inequality and Margaret fucking Thatcher. An entire Atlantic Ocean separates these two sketches of that period, yet it's clear that Cheap Picasso have brought them together via a few common denominators: disco, house and synth music. Music that does a jig on the deck of the speedboat, but remains moored in the misery of Reaganomics. Playing a mixture of music that treads the lines of deep house, Disco and techno, their view is if it sounds good we'll play it. After various appearances and residencies in their home town of Edinburgh the duo have set their sights upon uncharted waters, opening a brand new house night called Gasoline Dance Machine, on the 3rd Saturday of the month at Edinburgh's home of underground music, Cabaret Voltaire. It's here where the music does the talking and everybody dances providing a unique vibe that has to be experienced to believe. Gasoline Dance Machine has went from strength to strength thanks to Cheap Picasso's popular all night long sets mixed with a selection of hand-picked guests from around the world and is now approaching it's 3rd Birthday. With their début E.P gaining support from The Magician, Amine Edge & Dance and The Adana Twins there's plenty to be excited about from Cheap Picasso.
